Made last weekend at Chewton Lake in Central Victoria this image makes use of several key design elements. The water runs, in a diagonal line, from top left down to bottom right. This line leads the eye through the frame. The softness of the flowing water provides a strong contrast with the hardness of the block-like stone.

As significant gold mining had once been conducted in the area around this watercourse I wanted the image to harken back to days gone by. To achieve this sense of nostalgia I applied a warm color balance. Together with the slow Shutter Speed, to achieve the luminous mist-like glow in the flowing water, the warm color balance adds a presence, a sense of mystery to the image.

The original color file was rendered into black-and-white with Adobe Lightroom 2. The image’s warm tone was then applied in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
