This is an older image, made almost 5 years ago, at Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. The original film-based image has been a good seller, particular in postcard form. I remember making the original exposure with my wonderful Leica R8 camera, a little after sunrise. It was the beginning of a great day, full of picture making. I thought I’d use today’s post as an opportunity to explore the image rendered in black-and-white.

I’m happy with the result. The runner, while very small in the frame, stands out from the darker cliffs behind her. I love the way she’s positioned, somehow suspended in the light. The tonality changes from light to dark throughout the image also make it well suited to black-and-white.

The original 35mm transparency was scanned on a Heidelberg Tango film scanner, a very high-end unit indeed. The 60Mb scan brought out the full potential of the film-based image. Adobe Photoshop CS4 was employed to produce the final result.
