River Mouth and Sea

I made this image from a helicopter while taking a tourist flight along a section of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. It was a beautiful clear morning with very little wind, ideal for aerial photography. The expanded shape of the river’s mouth provided a visually strong shape from my elevated position above the landscape. The surrounding textures of the landscape and sea added to my interest.

I employed Adobe Lightroom 2 to render the original RAW file into black-and-white, so as to further emphasise the scene’s shape and textures. Adobe Photoshop CS3 was used to split tone the image. As a result the final image features subtle color contrast: cool shadows and warm highlights.

The final stage of the river’s journey to the sea is evident in this image. And yet, baring man-made or natural catastrophe, the event is ongoing. As long as the river goes on, so does its journey. I very much like that metaphor and hope you enjoy the image.
