City Highlights Melbourne
Here's a bit of fun from a cold, dark night. I drove down to Altona Beach in Melbourne, Australia looking for an interesting view of the city.
Frankly I felt that the shoreline from which I was shooting was too far away from the action and, as a consequence, the city lights were not dominant enough in the image. I could have employed a more powerful lens, but that would effectively crop the scene reducing the angle of view.
The solution was to defocus the image. So, instead of shooting with the lens focused at or about the infinity mark (for far away subject matter), I simply switched the lens over to Manual Focus and turned it as far as I could in the opposite direction to infinity. The result: a lovely, impressionist image which, rather than producing a realistic rendition of the scene, created more of an impression of the city's at night.
Adobe Lightroom 3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5 were employed for image processing.
