A Family Celebration

Here's a series of pictures from my older brother Brian's 50th Birthday celebration. There's the birthday boy, Bri Bri, in the foreground.

The restaurant offers good food and a relaxed and cosy atmosphere for the patron. However, such locations present the stills photographer with a range of difficulties, in particular very low light levels.

The solution: high ISO shooting and, where appropriate, fill flash. All of the images in this series were made with a combination of both high ISO (ISO 1000 and ISO 16000), which I only resort to when I have no other choice, and fill flash. Given the circumstances I'd say the results are fine. The secret with fill flash is to be able to use it in such a way that doesn't reveal that it has been used. If your subject has received extra illumination from the flash, yet that fact is not evident to the viewer, you're doing well.

Here's my dear old mum and the family matriarch, Mary, laying down the law.

The above image features my nepthew, Daniel, who stunned us all with several songs, including one self composition.

It was a wonderful night and a great opportunity to catch up with family. While my brothers and sisters live in different parts of the state and getting together is never easy, its always a joyous occasion and well worth the effort.
