Traditional Farm Building_Iceland
I just love black-and-white photography and this photo of an old farm building, covered in grass, was a great candidate for rendering into black and white. The color in the original scene was mostly muted shades of green and straw.
The conversion into black and white also allowed me to exploit the scene's textural qualities and tonal range to the fullest. Compositionally you can break the image up into a broken horizon, slopping down into the centre of the frame; three relatively equal sized grass-laden areas on the top, left and right of the image and the path that leads the eye up to the window in the lower centre of the frame.
I processed the original RAW file in Adobe Lightroom 3, prior to converting it into black-and-white in Adobe Photoshop CS5. This allowed me to locally adjust the luminosity of the image's dominant colors individually to achieve the desired levels of brightness and contrast. A subtle sepia-like tone was then applied to emphasise the nostalgic nature of the scene. I hope you like the final result.
