Statues Depict Great Events
I love statues and very much enjoy photographing them. Where ever possible I move in close and concentrate my composition upon expression and body language, just as I would when photographing real people in real life situations. And that's the point because statues so often depict important historical events (e.g. war, famine, independence) that underpin the human condition.
The above picture was made just off to the side from St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, Moscow. I think it's important when photographing an iconic structure, like St. Basil's Cathedral, to be mindful of other photo opportunities. So whether it's the grand view, details, abstracts or portraits experience has taught me that, where ever people gather, photo opportunities abound.
