Salzburg, Austria is one of my favorite places and Mirabell Gardens is one of this city's major tourist attractions. Famous as one of the settings in the classic musical, The Sound Of Music, Mirabell Gardens really is a beautiful place and great fun for the enthusiastic photographer.

Beating the Crowds

I only had a few days in which to explore Salzburg. It was mid August and full of tourists. My first visit to Mirabell Gardens was a quick reconnaissance, during the middle of the day, between a few short tours I'd be talked into taking. I made sure I returned again, towards the end of the day, when the light was softer. It did rain, quite heavily in fact, but I made the most of it and very much enjoyed doing so.

This particular photo was made, in between showers. The gardens were still busy with tour groups, so I had to wait quite a while to make some of the photos. In this case I opted for a fairly tight composition to give the impression that the gardens were empty.

An Unusual Approach

The conditions were gloomy and the statues I decided to photograph were quite dark. I decided to embrace contrast so as to bring some life, a sense of pop, back into the environment. To do so I moved around the sculptures until I was able to situate them against an even darker background. The areas of the rain-sodden statues facing the sky reflected quite a lot of light. This really brought out the shapes and textures within the statues and allowed them to stand out from the darker background.

Get Out and Get Dirty

It's not always easy photographing in busy, touristed areas. But it is possible. Likewise, inclement weather, while it seems to deter many folks, can provide loads of interesting opportunities to the enthusiastic photographer. But you'll never ever know, if you never ever go.
