Rain or Shine, Mirabell Gardens is a Delight

Here's a simple photo made of rain-sodden flowers in the beautiful Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, Austria. I'd spent the day touring the nearby hills, visiting local attractions. It had been a warm, sunny day but, just before I arrived back in town the heavens opened and several hours of quite heavy showers began.

Did that stop me, no way! Rain brings lots of opportunities and I continued to explore and photograph Mirabell Gardens and beyond.

Rain and Color

Rain washes away dust and saturate colors, particularly when the sun shines and set surfaces alight. Don't give up just because the weather heads south. Great photo opportunities await, particularly at the edges of the weather, when the hard-working photographer can be blessed with amazing light.

In fact the color in the leaves and flowers was so rich that I opted for a somewhat desaturated, vintage look. I achieved this predominantly in Adobe Lightroom, although Adobe Photoshop CS5 was also employed. Does it accurately represent reality, or the way my camera recorded it? No, but it's made for a better photo and, as a consequence, an enhanced viewer experience.

Salzburg is a lovely city, rich in history and architecturally fascinating. Mirabell Gardens is one of numerous first-class locations featured in the motion picture the Sound of Music. A delight in color and texture you won't be disappointed. And don't let a few drops of rain disappoint you. I got wet, walked back to the hotel to dry off, put on my raincoat and headed out for more.
