What's Best Color or Black and White

Black and white photo of a lovely historic cottage n rural IcelandCanon 5D Mark II camera and Canon 24-105mm f4 L series lens @ 32mm, Exposure Details: 1/50 second @ f11Here are two versions of the same image. The one at the top of this post a black and white rendering of the original color file underneath. While the orange color of the chimney and building sides was visually appealing, as a photograph I prefer the black and white version for the following reasons:

  • The texture within the grass that envelopes the house is much more evident
  • The tonality within the photograph is more defined, as is the old-world mood
  • The orange, while great to look at in reality, is a little overpowering in the photograph
  • Likewise the colors in the background buildings draw the eye away from our main subject

The one thing I like about the color version is the triangle formed between the chimney and the left and right sides of the building. Its much more clearly defined in the color version. Yet I still prefer the black and white version. But each to their own.

What about you? Which one is your favourite?
