Old School Dale

A sepia like portrait of Dale, seated on old machinery, on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia.

I've never been into cars, but a 50's American classic, with those incredible fins, or a classy Aston Martin I can certainly appreciate.

And who doesn't love old machinery? Even for someone like me, who can barely change a tyre or top up the oil, I do appreciate the beauty of old machinery.

Photographs that Speak of Days Gone By

Whether it’s industrial or domestic (e.g., milk shake maker); a tractor or a steam train; my appreciation is less to do with the function of these relics and more to do with a sense of nostalgia. And that's the approach I took with this image of Dale, looking very much at home, seated on a roller from days gone by.

Making Pleasing Portraits

The sky, which was quite overcast, produced a fairly soft light which illuminated both Dale and the machine with a lovely light that enhanced the shape and textural qualities of the scene. A black-and-white rendering of the original color file seemed appropriate, as did subtle warm sepia-like toning throughout the image.

Image processing was conducted in Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.
