Pic of the Week - Reflection, Harcourt Reservoir, Central Victoria
I loved making this image. I was running a photography workshop in Central Victoria, Australia and had taken my group to a Reservoir just outside the township of Harcourt. It should be stated that, due to the extended drought in this part of the world, the reservoir is not particularly photographic during daylight hours. But the transforming nature of early or late light can really bring the location to life.
This image was made with a Canon 5D camera and Canon 180mm f3.5 Macro L series USM lens. The telephoto aspect of the lens allowed me to make a nice, tight composition of the reeds and their reflection from the water's edge. This image was made some time after the sun had set. Fortunately there was still some warm light lingering in the sky that reflected onto the surface of the reservoir providing a color contrast with the blue water. The reeds, and their reflection, add an abstract element to the composition and the reflection of the trees helps to keep the eye from wandering out of the frame. I hope the lines, gentle colors and reflections communicate the sense of mystery I felt when making this image.
