Announcing Travel Photography Guru Russia Photography Collection
I’m very pleased to announce the addition of yet another gallery to the Travel Photography Guru site. My Russia Photography Collection showcases iconic images from Moscow and St. Petersburg. With an emphasis on architecture, both religious and secular, you’ll find a variety of images with which to engage.
Regular visitors to this site will notice my love of light and composition, explored through richly colored images and, via black and white, through an exploration of shape and texture.
My penchant for statues and night photography is also very much to the fore in this collection. Locations featured include the following:
- St. Basil’s Cathedral
- Peter and Paul Fortress
- The Rivers Neva and Moskva
- St. Isaac’s Cathedral
- Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
- Church of Savior on the Spilled Blood
- Novodevichy Cemetery
- Peterhof Palace
- Hermitage Museum
Navigating Your Way Around This Site
I’ve tried to make the structure of this website as straight forward to navigate your way around as possible. If you were to go up to the navigation bar at the top of this site you’ll see a tab called Photo Gallery.
Simply by hovering over that a drop down tab titled Photography Collections will appear. Clicking on that tab will bring you to a page from where all my current photography collections can be accessed.
As my photography collections are organized, at least initially, via continents Russia is no easy fit. Geographically Russia is both in Europe and Asia. These distinct areas of the country are separated by the Ural Mountains.
While the vast majority of Russia lies within the continent of Asia, except for the entire northern section which lies within the Arctic Circle, my travels have only taken me to the European side of the country. So that’s why and where you’ll find my Russia Photography Collection, should you decide to re-visit it at a later time.
Perhaps, one day, I would have visited enough of that great country for it to qualify for its very own section on this site. It is, after all, like no where else.
A Word or Two on Spelling
Those of you who are strong in their views as to how certain words should be spelt may already have picked up the inconsistency in the spelling of the words Savior/Saviour in the above bullet points.
I have a special post that will appear on this site tomorrow regarding that matter. It’s a tricky business as inconsistency may be as big a sin as what some folks consider to be inaccurate spelling.
This is already a fairly substantial collection. Over coming months it may double in size.
Nonetheless, it’s not in my nature to pretend that this collection encompasses all the beauty and history of these incredible cities. I only had around a week in Russia and, as it was near the end of a long (albeit exciting) and exhausting European photography tour my energies were already well depleted when I arrived.
The Ups and Downs of Travel
Frankly, I was very much in need of a holiday when I arrived on a late night flight from Vienna. A heavy flu and a nasty skin condition made things difficult in Moscow, while being bitten by mites throughout the night in my St. Petersburg hotel kept me severely sleep deprived for several days. But I’m nothing if not determined.
All in all, considering limited time and a range of other issues, I’m very happy with the photos within my Russia Photography Collection. And, of course, more will be added over time.
There are many sites in both cities that I didn’t get to the fist time around. I’d love to return to Russia and, in addition to re-visiting Moscow and St. Petersburg, one of the most beautiful cities I’ve yet visited, I’d love to photograph Novgorod, Kazan, Vladivostock and Lake Baikal. And to ride the Trans-Siberian Railway has long been a dream.
Russia is simply vast. So much to see and experience. So many people to meet and so many amazing sites to photograph. It’s a good life.
